Sean Cheben
Sean Cheben
Sean Cheben was elected to serve as Houston Community College Trustee for District V in 2023. Sean was born in Houston’s Clear Lake neighborhood and attended Clear Creek ISD schools through elementary, middle and high school. He was active in the Boy Scouts throughout his childhood, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating from Clear Lake in 2003, Sean attended the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering. Sean joined Chevron in 2007 and has held numerous roles over the past 16 years across engineering, operations, project management, strategy, and team leadership.
Sean met his wife, Brittany (also a Chemical Engineer), while they were both working in Midland, TX. They returned to Houston in 2013 to establish their family and recently celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary and their son Gabriel’s first birthday.
Education is central to the Cheben family story. Sean’s grandparents were blue-collar immigrants to New York City, where one grandfather worked constructing elevators and the other was a police officer with the Port Authority. Sacrifice, saving, and lots of love allowed them to send Sean’s parents, Joe and Maureen, to New York City’s Manhattan College to study engineering for the promise of a better life. Sean’s mother was a member of only the second class of chemical engineers at Manhattan College to include women. Through his own family’s experience, Sean has seen the transformative impact that a quality education can have on the lives of students and families and wants to ensure that this aspect of the American dream remains within reach for all students and families in Houston.
