Texas Nursery & Landscape Association (TNLA) Certifications

HCC has been awarded $550,000 by the USDA for the Workforce Development for Urban Landscape and Lawn Care (WFD-Houston) Grant Project. Sam Houston State University is the sub-recipient of this grant. 

The project's objective is to enhance and broaden two landscape certifications offered by the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association (TNLA): the Texas Certified Landscape Associate (TCLA) and the Texas Certified Landscape Professional (TCLP). Currently, these certifications can only be obtained through self-study of manuals and online testing. The project provides both TCLA and TCLP certifications in person, with instruction available in both English and Spanish. This approach includes extensive hands-on laboratory and field learning opportunities for participants.

TNLA has created a standardized landscaping training and credentialing program that allows organizations and companies to understand the qualifications of their professionals and new hires through the TNLA certification system.  These courses provide foundational through advanced landscaping skills and knowledge.  Trainees also receive hands-on practice and gain experience that will be used on the job. 

Texas Certified Landscape Associate (TCLA) 

The TCLA certification is 36 hours of instruction and lab work. 

During the course, students will receive an introduction to landscaping, hands-on experience with landscaping equipment that includes irrigation systems, and instruction from master gardeners. Anyone can take this course, from those interested in the possibility of a landscaping career to professionals who install or maintain landscape projects and want professional growth.

• M-W-F 01/13 – 02/10, class from 3-6 p.m.

Texas Certified Landscape Professional (TCLP)

The TCLP certification is 45 hours of instruction and lab work. 

This follow-on course to the TCLA is for individuals in the nursery/landscape industry interested in cultivating a high degree of knowledge and skill in horticulture and landscape development.  Students receive hands-on experience and training from qualified industry professionals.
