HCC Micro-Learning courses can fast track career growth

Mar 25, 2022

There is one certainty in today’s competitive workforce: employees need new skills and knowledge to keep from being left behind.

To help those seeking a way to get a leg up, Houston Community College has just launched a new suite of short-term, Micro-Learning courses. Each bite-sized course is designed to focus on specific, relevant skills employees need to become more valuable to their current or future employers.

“We know that today’s employees can be swamped at work, and the idea of returning to a college campus or studying online for a full course can be daunting,” said Dr. Michael Webster, HCC associate vice chancellor of Workforce Instruction. “So courses that offer students opportunities to quickly acquire in-demand knowledge and skills may be preferable.”

That’s where the micro-learning courses can make a difference. Students who complete them earn micro-credentials with transferable digital ‘badges’ that can enhance skillsets and spruce up resumes. Taught by HCC professors, the high-quality, affordable courses specifically target the skills and knowledge needed for employees to stay up to date.

Subjects cover a range of in-demand occupations, including project management, human resources, insurance and information technology. In IT alone, topics such as cyber security, server administration, technical support and more are offered.

If participants decide later to advance their studies with further classes, the micro-credentials can be used as credits toward a degree over time.
