HCC offers free youth, teen symposium for hands-on career exploration and college guidance
Mar 27, 2025
With college costs rising and career paths evolving, many families in Houston are asking the same question – what’s next for my student? To provide real answers, Houston Community College (HCC), the City of Houston, Houston ISD, Fort Bend ISD, and key community partners are hosting the Youth & Teen Symposium—a half-day event focused on helping students and parents navigate education and career opportunities.
Happening Saturday, April 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at HCC's Coleman College, the symposium will feature hands-on career experiences, expert-led presentations and direct access to professionals who can answer pressing questions about education, training and workforce options.
“Students will have the chance to engage in real-life training within a simulated environment, providing them with a safe space to learn, grow and build their confidence," said Dr. Lutricia Harrison, Coleman College president.
For many Houston students, especially those from historically underserved communities, higher education can feel out of reach. But free and low-cost college options exist, and this event will highlight them. Through dual credit, early college programs, financial aid and HCC’s Eagle Promise, students can start earning college credits in high school and access resources that are affordable and minimize debt.
"Families need clear, actionable information about college and careers," said Dr. Desmond Lewis, HCC associate vice chancellor of college readiness. "This event is about giving families direct access to the information and resources, experiences, and people that can help them make informed choices about their future."
Who Should Attend?
- Middle and High School Students who want to explore health sciences, technology, arts, and skilled trades options, try out state-of-the-art technology in their field of interest, connect with faculty about career and academic opportunities and discover how dual credit, early college and programs like Eagle Promise can make higher education more affordable or at no cost.
- Parents and Guardians who want straightforward guidance on college affordability, dual credit, workforce training and tuition-free degree programs that help students get ahead.
