HCC’s Online College 1-N.O.W. program leads the way in educational accessibility

Aug 27, 2024

With its robust array of programs designed to meet the diverse needs of today's learners, Houston Community College's (HCC) Online College is at the forefront of education.

Now, with the launch of the 1-N.O.W. Program, the convenience of completing courses toward a degree is getting even better. The program debuted this fall semester featuring three popular Associate of Arts programs: Business, Multidisciplinary Studies-General and Teaching.

The program allows students to take one class at a time, 100% online, every five weeks. Classes also provide supplemental instructor support, tutoring and library services support—all leading to a two-year associate degree.

"The 1-N.O.W. Program is designed specifically for the part-time student," said Dr. Jerome Drain, HCC Online College interim president. "By offering one class at a time, fully online on a convenient five-week schedule, the program is easily accessible for today's busy student who is likely balancing work, family life or other commitments."

Students can complete courses leading to degrees in business, multidisciplinary studies and teaching. Each class has a curriculum that is covered at an accelerated pace, allowing learners to balance their educational pursuits with other commitments.

For HCC online student Lorrin Gorman, HCC proved to be a logical choice as she began furthering her career in the dental sector, with the hope of moving from a dental assistant's role to that of a dental hygienist.

"I chose HCC because of the flexible scheduling," she said. "HCC has one of the more flexible online programs available. Having to tune in at a specific time for an online class wasn't going to work for me with my work schedule, but HCC's online, anytime option did. The convenience of it ... that's what really sold me."

The Online College has a special place in the heart of HCC Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D. During her tenure as founding president, HCC Online College’s reputation grew as a leader in accessibility and affordability in higher education. Newsweek has named it one of the nation's top online colleges for two consecutive years.

"The impact of the college is felt across the entire HCC service area," she said. "It offers our students the flexibility and convenience to study entirely online or to augment their course work in various programs across our system."

In all, the online college now offers more than 60 online degree and certificate programs spanning more than 80 academic and workforce subjects.
