Patrick Mayorquin joined several of his classmates for a celebratory lunch highlighting the one-year anniversary of a grant provided by Johnson Controls to educate future workers in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), fire and security fields. The $100,000 grant has provided $1,000 individual scholarships to 45 students in the program.

In 2022, the City of Houston received a $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor for a solar jobs program to provide career opportunities for residents without college degrees and living in under-resourced and underserved neighborhoods. The city turned to HCC for help in putting training in place. The college received about $250,000 to cover tuition, fees, tools and exams to train interested students in solar photovoltaic installation skills through next summer.

One of the most notable individuals to receive his degree wasn’t a student. Community leader William “Bill” A. Callegari received an honorary degree for his longstanding support of HCC. Callegari holds a special place in the hearts of both the HCC and Katy communities.

But this year, like the last three, Davis is again putting her sorrow into action. A manufacturing industry organization has donated $40,000 to Houston Community College to help students to succeed in skilled trade careers. The PVF Roundtable donation this month brings the organization’s total charitable contributions to the college to $150,000 since 2017 to fund scholarships for students to pursue jobs in manufacturing such as a welder, manual machinist, CNC machinist and industrial mechanic.

Earning an HCC diesel maintenance and repair certificate is a challenge that requires mechanical knowledge and the ability to master technologies used in the much-in-demand field. HCC student Leon Hosea is working hard to achieve that goal. But mastering the curriculum and showing his skills aren’t the only hurdles he must clear. Hosea lost his vision in 2014, which meant suspending his career as an aviation mechanic.
